STRETCHING TIPS FROM ATHLETICO
Stretching is an important part of training for an endurance athlete. The purpose of stretching is to lengthen soft tissue structures thereby increasing range of motion, which increases flexibility and can help prevent injury.
Here are a few stretching basics to know:
Stretch muscles before a workout to get them ready to perform for that activity. For example, if you are going running, a few muscle groups to stretch would be the quad, hamstring, and calf muscles. - Stretch muscles after exercise to bring them back to their optimum resting length. The same muscles that were stretched pre-activity are the same muscles to stretch post-activity.
- Stretch in a pain-free range. If the muscle you are stretching hurts, the body's natural response will be to tighten up to prevent any further lengthening.
- Stretch slowly using controlled movements, no bouncing or jerking.
For more tips on proper stretching, call 877.ATHLETICO or visit www.athletico.com.
